Djelato

Privacy Policy & Terms of Use

Last updated: 15 July 2026

Djelato is a live ice cream van tracker operated as a brand of Djinn's World. Djinn's World is owned and operated by Sheba Radley Ltd. This page explains how Djelato handles privacy, location data, driver accounts and documents, payments, public map information, and use of the Djelato app and website.

1. What Djelato Does

Djelato helps customers find live ice cream vans and curated ice cream places on a map.

Customers can use Djelato without creating an account. Customers may also optionally create a free account (email and password) to sign in and access customer features. Drivers apply for an account and use a private login to share their van's live location when they choose to go live.

2. What We Collect

Customers

Djelato does not require customers to create an account — the map and all core features work without one.

Customers may optionally create a free account using an email address and password, for example to access customer features as they are added. If you create an account, we store your email address and the authentication details needed to sign you in; we do not keep your password in readable form. Creating an account is never required to use the map, and you can delete your account at any time from inside the app or on the website (see Your Rights), which permanently removes your sign-in.

If you tick "Add me to the Djelato newsletter" when creating your account, we also pass your email address to our newsletter provider, Beehiiv, so we can send you occasional Djelato updates and marketing emails. This is optional and consent-based — you can unsubscribe at any time using the link in any newsletter (handled by Beehiiv).

If you allow location access, your location is used only to show your position on the map and help calculate your distance to nearby vans or places.

When you browse the map, your location is not stored by Djelato, not shared with drivers, and not sent to our servers. The only exceptions are the optional Area Alert and Wave features described below, which only apply if you choose to switch them on.

Van Alerts (Notifications)

In the Djelato app, you can tap the bell on a van to be notified when that van next goes live. If you turn this on, we store a notification token for your device and a record of which vans you have chosen to be alerted about, so we can send you those "van is now live" alerts. This does not involve or collect your location, and it does not create a customer account. You can turn alerts off at any time by tapping the bell again, or by disabling notifications for Djelato in your device settings.

Area Alerts (app only, optional)

In the Djelato app, signed-in customers can set a one-off Area Alert on a van — "notify me when this van is near me". If you choose to set one, we store the single map location you set it from (your alert spot), together with your device's notification token, on our servers — this is the only time Djelato ever stores a customer location, and it only happens when you actively switch the alert on.

An Area Alert is strictly one-shot and short-lived: the moment the van comes near your alert spot we send you one notification and immediately and permanently delete the stored location. If the van never comes near, the alert (and the stored location) is automatically deleted within 12 hours anyway. You can also cancel it yourself at any time by tapping the button again, which deletes it on the spot. Your alert spot is never shown to drivers, never shown to other customers, and never used for anything except deciding when to send you that one notification.

The Wave (optional)

Signed-in customers can tap 👋 Wave for ice cream to anonymously let nearby drivers know there is demand in their area. When you wave, your position is immediately rounded to a wide map square roughly 300 metres across before anything is stored — your exact location is never stored and never sent to drivers. The stored record is simply "someone is waving in this square".

A wave fades automatically after 12 hours and is then permanently deleted. You can also take your wave back at any time by tapping the button again, which deletes it on the spot. Drivers never see individual waves, numbers, or people — only a soft glow over an area, and only when enough people are waving there at the same time. Squares with too few waves show nothing at all, so a single wave can never be traced to a person or a street.

Booking Enquiries

If you send a booking enquiry to a van — for example to ask about hiring it for a private event — we collect the details you provide in the booking form, such as your name, email address, optional phone number, event date, event location or postcode, event type, guest number, and any message. These details are sent to the selected van driver so they can contact you about your enquiry, and Djelato also stores a copy of the enquiry for service, safety, support, and record-keeping purposes. Sending a booking enquiry does not create a customer account.

Drivers

When a driver logs in and chooses to go live, Djelato collects and stores the van's live GPS location so that it can be shown publicly on the map.

This live location is only used while the driver is sharing their location. When the driver goes offline, the live location is removed from the active public map.

Driver accounts also include operational details such as name, email address, phone number, van/business name, service area, tier/subscription status, and admin settings.

Drivers may also optionally save a home-base postcode. This is used only on the driver's own device, to remind them to stop sharing if they arrive back at their base while still showing as live. The home base is private: it is never shown on the map, never shared with customers, and can be changed or removed by the driver at any time.

Driver Applications & Documents

When someone applies to become a Djelato driver, we collect the details they submit (name, business/van name, email, phone number) and any documents they upload to support their application — which include public liability insurance, local authority food business registration, a street trading consent / event permit, and a photo of the driver with their van. Uploads are accepted as photos or PDF files only.

These documents are stored in a private, access-controlled store and are visible only to the Djelato team for the purpose of reviewing and approving applications and meeting our record-keeping and safety obligations. They are not shown on the public map and are not shared with customers or other drivers.

Ice Cream Places

Djelato may show curated ice cream shops, dessert places, or partner locations on the map. These entries may include public business information such as name, area, opening times, phone number, description, and logo.

3. How Location Works

Customer Location

Customer location is used on the device to help the customer see where they are in relation to live vans or listed places.

Djelato does not store customer location history. If you set an optional Area Alert in the app, only that single alert spot is stored, and only until the alert fires, you cancel it, or 12 hours pass — whichever comes first (see section 2). If you send an optional Wave, only a rough map square (about 300 metres across) is stored — never your exact position — and it is deleted within 12 hours or the moment you take it back (see section 2).

Driver Location

Driver location is different.

When a driver taps Go Live, their van's GPS location is stored and shown publicly on the Djelato map. This allows customers to find the van in real time. On the driver's device this updates in the background and while the phone is locked during an active shift, so the van stays visible while trading.

Drivers should only go live when they are working and want their van to be visible to the public.

When a driver taps Stop Sharing or goes offline, their live location is no longer shown as an active van location.

4. Cookies, Analytics and Tracking

Djelato does not use advertising trackers.

Djelato does not use third-party advertising analytics.

Djelato does not sell personal data.

At this stage, Djelato does not use cookies for customer tracking.

5. Why We Use Data

We use data only where needed to operate the Djelato service, including:

Lawful basis

We process driver account, application, and document information because it is necessary to provide the Djelato driver service, review applications, manage accounts, protect the service, and meet our legal, safety, and record-keeping responsibilities.

We process live driver location because it is necessary to provide the live map service when a driver chooses to go live.

Where we are required to keep certain records, we do so to meet our legal obligations. Where we protect the service from misuse or handle safety matters, we rely on our legitimate interests.

6. Who We Share Data With

Driver live location is shown publicly on the Djelato map while the driver is live.

When a customer sends a booking enquiry, the details submitted in the booking form are shared with the selected van driver so they can contact the customer about that enquiry.

We use trusted technology providers to run the service. These act as our processors and only handle data to provide their service to us:

We do not sell personal data. We do not share customer location with drivers. We may disclose information if required by law, for safety reasons, or to protect Djelato, drivers, customers, or the public.

Where your data is stored (international transfers)

Some of the technology providers listed above — including Supabase, Stripe, Resend and Beehiiv — are based in, or store data in, countries outside the UK, most commonly the United States. This means your personal data may be transferred internationally when we use these services. Where data is transferred outside the UK, we rely on the safeguards recognised under UK data protection law — such as the UK International Data Transfer Agreement (or the UK Addendum to the EU Standard Contractual Clauses), or a UK "adequacy" decision — so that your data continues to receive an equivalent level of protection.

7. Data Retention

Customer location is not stored by Djelato.

Driver live location is used to show the van on the map while live and is removed from the active public map when the driver goes offline.

If you turn on van alerts, your device's notification token and your chosen alerts are kept until you turn alerts off, disable notifications for Djelato, or the token becomes invalid (for example if you uninstall the app), after which they are removed.

If you set an Area Alert, the stored alert spot is deleted the moment the alert fires, the moment you cancel it, or automatically within 12 hours — whichever comes first. It is never kept as history.

Driver account information, application details, and uploaded documents are kept for as long as the driver remains registered with Djelato, or as long as reasonably needed for business, safety, legal, or record-keeping purposes.

Booking enquiries are kept for up to 3 months after the event date to support the customer and driver and to handle any queries or disputes, after which they are automatically deleted, unless we are required to keep certain records for longer by law.

When a driver closes their account (see section 10), their account, van listing, and uploaded documents are deleted, subject to any limited records we are required to keep by law.

8. Emails We Send

Djelato sends drivers necessary service emails — for example, a welcome message when an application is approved, and confirmation emails when a driver requests to close their account. These are sent on our behalf by Resend using the driver's registered email address.

When a customer sends a booking enquiry, Djelato emails the enquiry to the selected driver (at their registered email address) and sends the customer a confirmation that their enquiry has been sent. These transactional emails are also delivered by Resend.

These transactional emails are operational service messages, not marketing. The only marketing emails Djelato sends are the optional Djelato newsletter, and only to people who choose to opt in when creating an account. The newsletter is delivered by Beehiiv, and you can unsubscribe at any time using the link in any newsletter.

9. Driver Subscriptions, Tiers & Billing

Becoming a Djelato driver is free. Drivers start on Tier 1 at no cost. Optional paid tiers (Tier 2 and Tier 3) are subscriptions that enhance how a driver's van appears to customers on the map — for example a branded van pin and customer call & booking buttons. Paid tiers do not change a driver's own tools; going live is free at every tier.

Driver subscriptions are purchased and managed on the Djelato website (the driver dashboard), not inside the iOS app. Payments are processed securely by Stripe. Djelato does not see or store full card details.

Paid subscriptions renew automatically each month until cancelled.

10. Cancelling & Closing Your Account

Drivers can manage their plan through the Djelato website dashboard. Drivers can also initiate account closure from inside the app or from the website dashboard. There are two separate things you can do:

Cancel a paid subscription

Cancelling a paid subscription (through the billing portal) stops future renewals. Your paid tier stays active until the end of the current billing period, after which you return to the free Tier 1. We do not provide mid-period refunds for the unused part of a period.

Close your account entirely

Closing your account is permanent and immediate. To protect against accidental or unauthorised closure, we email you a one-time confirmation link, and nothing is deleted until you click it. Once confirmed, we remove your van from the map and permanently delete your account, listing, uploaded documents and pin images, and any active subscription is cancelled at that point. We also remove your customer record at our payment provider; Stripe itself retains the underlying payment and invoice records it is legally required to keep for financial record-keeping periods.

Because closure takes effect immediately, any remaining paid time in your current billing period is forfeited and is not refunded. If your aim is only to stop being charged, use "cancel subscription" rather than closing your account, so you can continue to use the time you have already paid for.

11. Children and Families

Djelato may be used by families to find ice cream vans. Children should use Djelato with permission from a parent or guardian.

Drivers are independent businesses or authorised operators. Djelato does not replace parental supervision or normal public safety awareness.

12. Driver Responsibilities

Drivers are responsible for using Djelato honestly, safely, and lawfully.

Drivers must only share their live location when they are authorised to do so and are comfortable for their van location to be visible to the public.

Drivers must hold the licences, insurance, and certificates required for their business, and must provide accurate information and genuine documents when applying.

Drivers must not misuse the app, impersonate another business, provide false information, interfere with the service, or use Djelato in a way that may cause harm.

Djelato may suspend or remove driver access where necessary.

13. Accuracy of the Map

We do our best to keep Djelato accurate and useful, but live maps and business information can sometimes change quickly. Ice cream vans may move, go offline, finish trading, lose signal, or update later than expected. Shop details, opening times, and locations may also occasionally be incorrect or out of date.

Djelato is designed to help you find ice cream vans and ice cream shops more easily, but it cannot guarantee that every location, time, route, or availability status will always be correct.

Please use the information in the app as a guide and make sensible checks where needed before travelling.

14. Terms of Use

By using Djelato, you agree to use the app and website responsibly.

You must not:

Bookings. Where you send a booking enquiry to a van, any booking is arranged directly between you and the driver. Djelato passes your enquiry to the selected driver so they can contact you, but Djelato is not a party to the booking and is not responsible for the event, availability, pricing, arrangements, or payment, which are agreed directly between you and the driver. Drivers are responsible for honouring and fulfilling any bookings they accept.

We may update, suspend, restrict, or remove access to Djelato where needed to protect the service, users, drivers, or the public.

15. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy & Terms of Use from time to time.

The latest version will be made available through the Djelato app, website, or official Djelato pages.

16. Your Rights

Depending on your location and the law that applies, you may have rights over your personal data, including the right to request access, correction, deletion, restriction, or objection to certain uses of your data.

Drivers can delete their own account and data at any time using "Close my account" on the website dashboard (see section 10). Customers who have created an account can delete it at any time from the "Account" option inside the app or on the website, which permanently removes their sign-in. You can also make a privacy request using the contact details below.

If you are ever unhappy with how Djelato has handled your personal data, you have the right to complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO), the UK's independent regulator for data protection, at ico.org.uk. We would welcome the chance to put things right first, so please contact us (section 17) before you do.
